Local traders in Beverley have called on envrionment secretary John Prescott to prevent East Riding of Yorkshire Council giving the go-ahead to an edge-of-town Tesco superstore.

The Daily Telegraph (p9) reports that council officials will recommend acceptance of the superstore plan at a planning committee meeting today which is expected to attract up to 500 protesters.

The Beverley Chamber of Trade says the superstore is precisely the kind of development identified in a report for Mr Prescott as likely to destroy town-centre jobs.

But a report for the council - by the same consultants who worked on Mr Prescott's report, CB Hillier Parker, endorsed the plans for the site, saying the superstore would bring in trade which now goes to Hull.

A council spokesman said: 'Officials say the superstore will be good for Beverley as it will bring people into the town several days a week, instead of just on Saturdays at present. People will be able to park free at Tesco's car park, whereas they have to pay everywhere else.'

A final decision is expected to be taken on 23 December.
