Commenting on John Prescott's bus summit, Shaun Woodward, Conservative transport spokesman, said: 'Once again, John Prescott is trying to blame everybody else but himself for the government's failure.

'It seems extraordinary that it has taken him two and a half years to start talking to the bus companies. This is a crisis summit of his own making. Since Labour came to power, bus usage has gone down.

'If he wants to work `in partnership with buses he should apply some common sense today and stop promoting policies which take money way from the transport budgets of rural counties.

'Labour's war against the motorist, with its massive extra taxes on petrol and the ever spilling costs of running a car, have helped produce this crises.

'Labour have failed the motorist, and they have failed to produce a decent alternative in public transport.'
