Environment secretary John Prescott yesterday signalled more funding and a greater role for regional development agencies, reports The Times (p12).

He said that RDAs, seen as a stepping stone to regional government, would be boosted by next week's government spending announcement. 'I think the spending review will show just how important we think their future is.'

Mr Prescott said he believed RDAs had played a major role in the record levels of inward investment in Britain.

'Therefore, to that extent, I believe that the RDAs can be given more influence and indeed more resources to get on with that job. I believe they are already a success in the first 12 months of operation,' he said.
