The Labour group dismissed claims by Conservative Party chairman Brian Mawhinney that the meeting was called because the council is out of control.
Three police cars were sent to restore order at a committee meeting last week. A row erupted when the opposition failed to pass a motion which would have stopped 30 redundancies.
Conservative councillor Melvin Pitt overturned a table and threw his papers around the room, while Unison members shouted abuse from the gallery. Police were called to restore order and Labour councillors were escorted from the building.
The issue has split the Labour group in half, with 17 members now against the redundancies.
