A full page interview with John Prescott in The Daily Telegraph (24 July, p4) says his problem is that, after decades as an MP with no ministry, he is suddenly running this huge unwieldy department

covering not only transport but also the regions, the environment and housing.

'You've forgotten campaigning and being deputy prime minister', Mr Prescott chides the interviewer. He said he thought it was possible physically, mentally and intellectually to do all this at once.

And he revealed: 'Before I started this job, I went to Michael Heseltine and said 'How do you manage a big department?' and he said, 'Delegate'.

'So that's what I do and I work 24 hours a day to keep up. I think I cope pretty well and now and then I go and do some things for the prime minister.'
