Prince Charles will this week attack the government over building on the green belt, according to the Sunday Express (p4). He will publicly condemn schemes to move people out of run-down inner cities and towns, and, instead, call for a major programme of regeneration of the inner
cities and safeguarding of their long-established communities.
Prince Charles will also propose - on his personal internet website - that instead of moving people, so they feel as though they are living on building sites, communities should be recreated where people already live.
The Sunday Express says despite his moves to regenerate the inner cities and pledges he has given to protect the countryside, John Prescott has given the go-ahead for massive building on
green belt sites near Stevenage, Newcastle upon Tyne and Crawley. About 1,700 people a week are now leaving cities for country towns and villages, and entire streets in northern cities are being abandoned or knocked down as people move south and building on greenbelt spirals.
