Millionaire property developer John Beckwith wants to put at least£2m into a new inner-city state secondary school specialising in sports - one of the government's new-style city academies, reported The Sunday Times (p7). The school, to be run by its sponsors, will be one of 17 academies planned by government in an effort to improve inner-city exam results.

The Youth Sport Trust, which has already had more than£1m funding from Sir John, has been at work in state schools for the past five years. It also provides advice to schools that want to become specialist sports colleges.

Research to be published this week by the Technology Colleges Trust is expected to show that specialist schools produce better results results than other schools taking a similar cross-section of pupils.
