Returns from local authorities on the Joint Staffing Watch from May of this year had virtually been completed and the necessary statistics would be assembled for publication around the end of September, Scottish local government minister George Kynoch announced today.

'I attach great importance to the monitoring of local authority staffing, and I am glad that the returns from local authorities dealing with their staffing levels in May of this year are now at last virtually complete. It is disappointing that The Scottish Office had to apply a great deal of pressure to obtain this essential information from some authorities and I hope that they will now be able to provide future data in good time without having to consider enforcement action.

'The data will now be assembled and checked, and I hope it will be published at the end of September. I and many others concerned with local government will scrutinise it with great interest.'
