PUBLIC INQUIRIES INTO THE PARLIAMENTARY BOUNDARY COMMISSION'S ...
PUBLIC INQUIRIES INTO THE PARLIAMENTARY BOUNDARY COMMISSION'S

PROPOSALS FOR CONSTITUENCY BOUNDARIES IN THE COUNTIES OF NOTTINGHAM AND NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

The commission published proposals on 14 February 2002, recommending

that Nottingham and Nottinghamshire be reviewed separately, with

Nottingham continuing to be allocated three seats, and

Nottinghamshire continuing to be allocated eight seats.

Objections made about the proposals affecting Nottinghamshire have

required the holding of a local inquiry under the Parliamentary

Constituencies Act 1986. The commission have also exercised their

discretion under the Act and have decided to hold a separate local

inquiry about the proposals affecting Nottingham. Official notice of

the two inquiries will be published in local newspapers on 9 May

2002. The two inquiries are to be run independently of each other,

and no representation will be considered at one inquiry which relates

to the other inquiry.

Both inquiries will be held in public and any interested person,

whether a supporter of or objector to the commission's proposals for

that particular area may attend and be heard. The commission would

urge all interested parties to attend and make their views known at

the relevant inquiry. It should not be assumed that the inquiries

will only discuss those matters raised in representations submitted

during the representation period allowed nor that the commission's

provisional recommendations will remain unchanged. On many occasions,

following consideration of the evidence submitted at an inquiry and

the assistant commissioner's report, the commission have revised

their recommendations. While the commission will always invite

written representations in respect of any revised recommendations

they might publish, all interested parties should be aware that they

may not be able to state their case at a further inquiry, as a

further inquiry will only rarely be held.

Although arrangements have been made for the two inquiries to be held

independently of each other, they are to be conducted by the same

assistant commissioner, Charles B Kealy. The inquiry relating to

issues concerning Nottingham will open on:

WEDNESDAY 26 JUNE 2002 at 10.30am in the COUNCIL CHAMBER,

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL, COUNTY HALL, WEST BRIDGFORD,

NOTTINGHAM.

The inquiry relating to issues concerning Nottinghamshire will open

on:-

THURSDAY 27 JUNE 2002 at 10.30am in the COUNCIL CHAMBER,

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL, COUNTY HALL, WEST BRIDGFORD,

NOTTINGHAM.

It should be noted that one day only is allocated to the Nottingham

inquiry.

The provisional recommendations, copies of the representations made

to the Commission for both areas (together with summaries), and

separate statements by the Commission for each of the two areas, each

of which will be introduced formally at the relevant inquiry, are
