The vital role that cities have to play in the future of a strong and dynamic Europe has been stressed by Cardiff Council leader Russell Goodway.

Mr Goodway, who has been speaking during discussions between the European Commission and the Conference of Atlantic Arc Cities in Brussels, has urged European Commission officials to pay more attention to the needs of cities.

Mr Goodway said: 'The European Union goes on about creating a Europe of the regions. We need to hear more talk about a Europe of the cities. Cardiff has a vital stake in the future of the European Union, and we want to influence EU decisions about how and where money is spent'.

Mr Goodway's comments follow the publication of the European Commission's proposals for successor arrangements to Objective One, Two and Three funds (see LGCnet). He added, 'Cardiff stands to lose out unless European officials start to understand that the prosperity of Europe depends on the economic performance of cities.'
