Lambeth LBC had to draft in extra security staff to protect council bosses from the wrath of angry residents, the South London Press reports (p4).

The new Labour administration has come under fire for a host of unpopular decisions and in the last 14 days two committee meetings have been forced to adjourn behind closed doors after demonstrators disrupted debates.

During the social services committee on Thursday last week disabled people took over the microphones after the council axed the£184,500 grant for a care centre.

On Monday night police were called to an education committee meeting in Brixton. The number of people at the meeting had to be limited to 60 for safety reasons.

Campaigners wanted to voice their objections to seven school closures and, after being locked out, stormed the building.
