An ICM poll for The Guardian (p3) has found that there is overwhelming public support for the idea that teachers should promote marriage as part of sex education in schools.

But there is also strong support that schools should at the same time teach children that it is wrong to be abusive towards gay and lesbian people.

The response indicates that there is heavy public backing for the two elements in the compromise on the Section 28 row which the cabinet is close to agreeing in order to avert a showdown with the house of lords.

More than two-thirds of voters support the compromise which has been put forward by the Bishop of Blackburn, and is being canvassed within the cabinet as a way of overcoming the opposition of the lords to the repeal of s28.
