Total orders received by contractors for construction work in Great Britain in the three months August to October were nine per cent higher than in the previous three months May to July 1993 and 18 per cent higher than in the three months August to October 1992. These provisional figures are based on the value of orders at constant (1985) prices adjusted to exclude normal seasonal variations.

New orders in the private housing sector in the three months August to October 1993 were 13 per cent higher than in the previous three months and 26 per cent higher than in the corresponding period a year ago.

Public housing and housing association orders in the latest three months were 3% higher than in the previous three months and 33% higher than in the same period a year earlier.

Public non-housing orders (excluding infrastructure) in the latest three months were 16 per cent higher compared with the previous three months and 22 per cent higher than in the corresponding period a year ago.
