New construction orders in public sector housing were 11% lower in the first quarter of 1994 than in the previous quarter and 17% lower than in the same quarter of 1993, says the DoE.

Total orders received by contractors for construction work in Great Britain in the first quarter of 1994 were 5% lower than in the fourth quarter of 1993 but 10% higher than in the first quarter of 1993.

New orders in the private housing sector in the first quarter of 1994 were 7% higher than in the previous quarter and 28% higher than in the first quarter of 1993.

Public non-housing orders (excluding infrastructure) in the latest quarter were 13% higher compared with the previous quarter and 5% higher than in the corresponding quarter a year ago.
