The Times (Jan 17, p2) reported that the government has decided to reduce pay awards to 1.3 million doctors, teachers and other public sector staff, risking a rift with trade unions.

Review bodies are recommending increases of about 4 per cent for public sector staff, but ministers are determined to stick with the tight curbs on salaries imposed by the last government and are likely to phase in the rises, paying 2.5 per cent in April and the remaining 1 to 1.5 per cent in from December.
