PUBLIC SECTOR PAY FREEZE - UNISON REACTION

Reacting to reports that the government intends to freeze the public sector pay bill for the fourth year running, Unison general secretary Rodney Bickerstaff said:

'Coming so soon after the government's weak attempts to give a lead over the 26% pay increase to MPs, this is just the sort of hypocrisy which we foresaw and which really angers the public.

'There is clearly one law for the powerful - and another for the millions of people who staff our vital public services. So much for a classless society at ease with itself.

'Now these front line staff are apparently to suffer further real pay cuts, and more job insecurity and unemployment, just to pay for tax cuts with which the government hopes to bribe voters in the forthcoming election.

'The pay bill freeze over the past three years has led to serious reductions in services. I do not believe the public will stand for more of the same.'
