John Gummer is calling on the public to choose a new habitable bridge for the Thames, after he and his fellow judges failed to vote an outright winner, The Times reports (p7).

Two schemes have been shortlisted from competition entries - by London-based Zaha Hadid, whose controversial design for a Cardiff Bay Opera House recently came to grief, and French architect Antoine Grumbuch. Ballot papers will be available at an exhibition at the Royal Academy.

Gummer wants private developers to take on the chosen design and, subject to the views of local authorities, to build it by the end of the decade.
