McMillan Group plc is set to take over British Publishing Company, which publishes most of the guide books to local areas published by councils.

The books are a guide to council services and amenities and are partly paid for from advertising by local firms.

BPC is believed to hold around 60% of the market in publishing the books.

Because McMillan also holds an estimated 15% of the market, the company has made a submission to the Office of Fair Trading.

Ferguson International Holdings plc, BPC's owner, issued a statement saying negotiations with McMillan had reached 'the stage of due diligence', which means detailed figures are being discussed.

The outcome of the negotiations will not be known for some weeks.

Until then, Ferguson would continue to manage BPC, the statement said.
