Pubs and hotels are among the worst offenders when it comes to not paying their business rates, according to local authorities, Caterer & Hotelkeeper magazine reports (p12).

It says each year councils are forced to write off thousands of pounds in unpaid rates because publicans and hoteliers either go bust or simply cannot meet their bills.

Teesdale DC was forced to write off£27,000 in unpaid business rates last year, more than£20,000 of which was owed by pubs and restaurants. The council is now campaigning to take control of drinks licensing, which it could use to force hospitality business to pay up.
