More than 100 pupils from Pimlico School went on strike yesterday over private finance initiative plans to demolish the school and sell off a quarter of the site for a£20m luxury flats development, the Daily Telegraph reports (p1).

Home secretary Jack Straw is supporting the scheme which involves the school being rebuilt and managed for 35 years by a consortium of property developers.

Teh project is opposed by the headmaster, staff, local residents, pupils and parents.

Westminster City Council planned to hold a meeting at the school yesterday to justify its reasons for not refurbishing the building. But the venue was hastily changed to Westminster City Hall after the council learned objectors planned to voice their protests, the paper says.

Three sixth-formers took their protest to the city hall where they were refused admission to the council meeting.
