William Waldegrave, the minister responsible for science, yesterday unveiled a £250,000 scheme to promote science and technology through local schools and industry, reports the Independent (p1).

Speaking to the British Association for the Advancement of Science, Mr Waldegrave said the scheme was a response to the anxiety about a decline in the numbers taking science at school.

Three pilots are to start in the North of England, Yorkshire and Humberside
