David Rendel will continue as the Liberal Democrat's local government spokesman in a reshuffle of the party's front-bench team due to be announced today.

A new 'leader's committee', under the chairmanship of party leader Paddy Ashdown, and eight 'team leaders' has been created.

Simon Hughes, as leader of a community and urban affairs team, will take the lead on local government.

Matthew Taylor will be environment team leader.

Meanwhile, Labour's environment spokesman Jack Straw said it was 'astonishing' that an education spokesman had not been named by Mr Ashdown.
