Reacting to the Queen's speech, which does not contain a so-called third housing bill, previously mooted by the government, National Housing Federation chief executive Jim Coulter said:

'We're delighted that the government has not gone ahead with plans to bring for-profit organisations into social housing. We now hope that this is an idea that will be dropped permanently.

'Whichever party is in power after the next election should commit itself to protecting the voluntary, not-for-profit nature of the sector. The organisations we represent already provide efficiency and value-for-money in return for public subsidy.'
