The Times (p19) carries a letter from John Stewart and George Jones, from the School of Public Policy, Birmingham, concerning the ratio of councillors to people.

At present the ratio is one councillor to 1,800 people, says the letter, and now this is to be reduced still further than the Local Government Commission's proposals of one to 4,000.

Now is the time for the government to consider these proposals before the debate becomes further entrenched in questions of boundaries and tiers of new authorities.
