The Local Government Association today welcomed the announcement by environment minister Michael Meacher that he will make it easier for local authorities to prosecute those who cause excessive noise disturbance to neighbours at night.

Cllr Jane Chevis, chair of the LGA's Public Protection Executive, said,

'These new powers will enable local authorities to take speedy and effective action against nuisances and disturbances, and will be of great help in communities where noise can be a problem.

'As most noise pollution occurs in the evening or at weekends, these new powers will invariably require councils to put arrangements in place for out of hours work. The LGA looks forward to discussions with the government about how this can be resourced.'
