Heather Rabbatts, the new chief executive of Lambeth LBC has denied that there is any similarity between the departure of Bebb Burchell from Lambeth and the reasons behind Sari Conway leaving Bradford City Council.

In a letter to The Times Educational Supplement (p22) she said that Bebb Burchell's recent departure as director of education at Lambeth LBC 'was the result of a council decision following normal consideration of the director's contract renewal'.

Sari Conway's departure as director of education at Bradford City Council was the result 'of a mutually agreed settlement to terminate an on-going contract.' she said.

The recommendation that Bebb Burchell - the country's first Black director of education - should not have her contract renewed came from Sari Conway after she was appointed to Lambeth LBC as an interim chief executive pending the arrival of Heather Rabbatts.

'While Jill Stansfield is acting of director of education until a permanent appointment can be made, Mrs Conway is remaining with Lambeth to complete certain projects' Heather Rabbatts writes.
