Leeds city council's Racial Harassment Project logged a 150 per cent increase in race attacks in 1996 (from 28 to 96), reports the Yorkshire Post (p8).

A Leeds spokesman said the increase can partially be explained by the fact that the figures for 1995 were for only eight months.

However, the figures for 1997 are set to rise further, said the spokesman, because the Project is gaining the confidence of the black and Asian community in Leeds.
