Swansea City & County Council has dropped its lord mayor elect after he made allegedly racist comments in an election leaflet.

A joint statement said the Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Plaid Cymru and Independent groups had reported Richard Lewis (Ind) to the local government ombudsman.

The five parties considered it inappropriate for Mr Lewis to become lord mayor while the subject of 'very serious allegations which touch directly upon the nature of the office'.

He has been replaced by Margaret Smith (Ind) as lord mayor.

Mr Lewis is understood to have made comments on the issue of visas to Bangladeshi nationals. He could not be contacted for comment.
