A 13-year-old Sikh schoolboy hanged himself only days after winning a merit award for a poem he had written about bullying, reports The Daily Telegraph (p12).

Schoolfriends of Vijay Singh, who wore a turban, said he had been subjected to racial abuse.

Vijay, who attended Stretford High School, was found hanging from a banister at his home on Sunday.

Education committee chair David Acton expressed his sympathy to the boy's family.

'Obviously the police investigation is at an early stage, but if there are any issues that the local authority needs to address then we will do so.'
