Following the laying of special grant report 100 in parliament on Wednesday the LGA has welcomed the government's announcement that additional resources have been provided for local authorities in 151 rural areas granting relief from rates to businesses suffering hardship as a result of the foot and mouth outbreak.

The report extends by a further three months the period under which councils can give financial support to local businesses affected by the foot and mouth outbreak. The period covered runs to 31 March 2002.

Christine Reid, chair of the LGA's rural executive said:

'This is good news. It means councils will be able to help businesses affected by the foot and mouth outbreak for a full calendar year. We are also pleased that the government has listened to our representations and agreed to extend eligibility for increased funding to North Cornwall and West Somerset.'

North Cornwall and West Somerset DCs are to receive increased funding in respect of properties with a rateable value of up to£50,000.
