There was no place in the list of appointees to the new North East Development Agency Board for the leader of the North of England Assembly of Local Authorities, and leader of Sunderland City Council, Bryn Sidaway.

Northumberland CC leader Mike Davey, also an NEA vice-chairman, sought to play down the significance of his omission.

'It's up to the people who were interviewing to make their choice and we have got to accept their judgment,' he told The Journal.

Derek Foster, the Bishop Auckland MP, criticised the relative lack of representation from County Durham compared to other parts of the region. 'It's a tradegy that Don Robson, the leader of Durham CC, was not able to take up a place due to illness,' he said.
