Reading BC is urging householders to appeal against the council tax banding of their homes, the Guardian reports (p6).

The council claims that people could be paying up to £1m toomuch because of errors made by the Inland revenue valuers.

The move is believed to be the first time a council has lead such a campaign while councillors yesterday criticised the government for not advertising the fact that people have less than three weeks in which to appeal against valuation.

The paper claims that more than 700,000 appeals have been lodged against banding valuations.
