Redcar and Cleveland BC is under attack because it is one of the few councils in the country which doesn't ignore war pensions when calculating benefits, reported The Evening Gazette.

But now the council's social justice committee has asked the policy and resources committee for a 'full sympathetic review' of the policy which means only the first£10 of war pensions is disregarded when benefits are calculated.

Social justice committee chairman Ian Jeffrey admitted protests by pensioners were a key factor in the decision. 'It is disgraceful that we have seen old men stood outside a Labour-controlled authority trying to get their just deserts,' he said.

To fully disregard war and war widows' pensions across Redcar and Cleveland would cost£192,000. Other options include additional disregards of£5 - at a cost to the council of£39,700,£10 (£79,400) or£20 (£158,900).
