Broadcaster Brian Redhead is to lead the new Commission for Local Democracy, a two year research project and think tank which will investigate the state of local government in England and Wales. The commission promised to maintain its independence by not taking any money from local government.

Commission director David Clark said the many prominent people who had pledged support were not blind to its problems. 'We have a work programme which includes substantial research reports '.

The eight commissioners are former Croydon LBC Chief Executive Roger Jefferies, former South Somerset DC Leader Jane Clark, former Lewisham LBC Leader Steve Bullock, former Berkshire CC Leader Gareth Gimblett, Child Poverty Action Group Director Sally Witcher, journalist Simon Jenkins, Professor Gerry Stoker of Strathclyde University and Professor Kieron Walsh of Birmingham University.
