The Society of County Trading Standards Officers has said the current local government reform process could fragment vital trading standards services. making them 'more expensive, less efficient and unable to deliver an effective service for consumers and industries'.

The society believe this will leave the market open for 'conmen and trading crooks'.

SOCTSO chair David Sibbert said: 'Existing county council trading standards are dynamic, provide centres of excellence and deliver good value services'.

He added: 'We have listened to the views of consumer organisations, the business community and major retailers. They are of one voice in opposing a breakup of the service'.
