Selby DC might lose its chain of office because of the loss of Fulford ward to the new City of York UA, the Yorkshire Post reports (p8).

The £25,000 medallion was a gift in 1974 by long serving councillor Richard Britton and his late father by deed of covenant. One of the conditions was that the family could reclaim the gold-plated chain if their ward no longer fell within the boundary of Selby district.

But local government reform has done exactly this.

Council chairman Dean Howson hopes to replace the chain at minimal cost. 'It would be immoral to spend a lot of money on a chain of office at a time when people are losing their jobs so we won't be doing anything extravagant,' he said.
