My faith in my fellow countrymen and women had one of its periodic renewals the other day while reading an otherwise dry Electoral Commission press release.

Apparently, between July and September this year, the Legalise Cannabis Alliance received twice as much in public donations as the British National Party.

Whatever your views on what my grandchildren call 'smoking the draw' - and personally I prefer a good pipe - it is clearly a better object of one's campaigning energies than the politics of racism.

Granted, the figures we are talking about are low - £5,200 as opposed to £2,675 - but it is good to hear that this 'modern Britain' I have been hearing so much about is starting to vote with its pocket.

My challenge for the LCA is to win over the BNP's rump of financial supporters in the next quarter.
