Regulatory burden exposed

  • Comment
Seventy-one percent of businesses think council-enforced regulations can be as big a burden as tax and employment law.

Ipsos MORI research for the Local Better Regulation Office (LBRO) revealed that a third of the 1,000 businesses surveyed said they had received inconsistent compliance advice from different local authorities.

LBRO chair Clive Grace said: "The survey underlines the need to ensure that regulatory services’ work is not just to protect consumers, workers and the environment, but to support businesses in complying with regulations."

Iain Hasdell, part of KPMG’s local government group, said councils’ regulatory and economic development departments needed to have closer working relationships.
