A joint report by the Wildlife Trusts and the World Wide Fund for Nature has concluded that concrete coastal defences are rapidly destroying beaches and wetlands by adding to the sea's erosion effects.

The Guardian (p8) reports that, according to the study, millions of pounds are beig misspent by coastal defence committees on higher and higher defences to make up for the loss of beaches.

Instead, the report recommends allowing retreat - where land under threat from the sea is simply abandoned - as a matter of urgency on land around the Humber, the Wash and Essex and Kent estuaries.
