The Audit Commission's National Fraud Initiative sharply increased its detections in 2004/05, uncovering more public sector fraud and overpayment.

The growing success of the scheme provides a powerful deterrent to people considering fraud against the public purse.

A report to be launched by the Audit Commission on 30 May will give details of detected fraud and overpayments in housing benefit, pensions, payroll, parking and transport, concessions, social housing and residential care.

Its key findings will be outlined by report author Peter Yetzes and commission chief executive Steve Bundred.
