44: Meg Hillier

Following the convention that an Opposition MP chairs the Public Accounts Committee, Labour’s Meg Hillier took over after the general election.

Her predecessor, Margaret Hodge, had turned the PAC into a star chamber in which those who had presided over waste and inefficiency in Whitehall were held up to withering scrutiny and occasionally ridicule.

Whether the Hackney South & Shoreditch MP intends to continue this remains to be seen, but the role is an influential one if the PAC chair chooses to use it that way.

Ms Hillier was an Islington LBC councillor and London Assembly member before entering Parliament in 2005.
