Statement from Jeremy Beecham, chair of the Local Government Association:

'I welcome the news that Sir George Bain is to be joined by Sir Tony Young,

the past president of the TUC, and Sir Michael Lyons, most recently chief

executive of Birmingham City Council in his work on the independent review

of the fire service. In particular, Sir Tony's presence should at last

silence FBU criticism of the inquiry and put paid to union claims that any

government backed inquiry could not be viewed as independent. The union

should welcome Sir Tony's involvement in the review. Any refusal to

cooperate now appears increasingly irrational.'
