Ministerial responsibilities at the departments of the environment, transport and the regions were announced today.

The details are as follows:

The John Prescott, deputy prime minister and secretary of state for the environment, transport and the regions.

The deputy prime minister has responsibility for the overall direction of the two departments and their agencies and has overall responsibility for the regions in England and for London.

Minister for transport: Gavin Strang. Gavin Strang has responsibility for the department of transport and its agencies. He is a member of the cabinet.

Minister of state (minister for the environment): Michael Meacher.

Michael Meacher is responsible for the environment, countryside, water and for the health and safety commission and executive.

Minister of state (minister for local government and housing): Hilary Armstrong.

Hilary Armstrong is responsible for local government and housing.

Minister of state (minister for the regions, regeneration and planning): Richard Caborn.

Richard Caborn is responsible for regional development and government, regeneration and planning.

Parliamentary under secretary of state (minister for London and construction): Nick Raynsford.

Nick Raynsford is responsible for the construction industry. He will also support the deputy prime minister on London. Additionally he will support Hilary Armstrong on local government and housing and Richard Caborn on planning. He will also be responsible for ordnance survey and the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre.

Parliamentary under secretary of state: Angela Eagle. Angela Eagle will support Michael Meacher on environment, countryside and water and on the health and safety commission and executive. She will also support Richard Caborn on regions and regeneration and will be responsible for energy efficiency and the British Waterways Board.

Parliamentary under secretary of state (minister for transport in London): Glenda Jackson.

Glenda Jackson is responsible for transport in London, integrated transport policy, London Transport, railways, local transport outside London, aviation and shipping.

Parliamentary under secretary of state (minister for roads): The Baroness Hayman.

Baroness Hayman is responsible for roads and road safety. She will also be Lords spokesman for both the departments of environment and transport.
