A Labour council is expected to withdraw an advertisement for foster-parents and adoptive families which 'particularly welcomed' inquiries from gay and lesbian people, according to The Guardian (21 Sept p4).

Rotherham MBC director of social services Pat Nolan said he would not defend the wording of the advert, which had not intended to particularly target gay and lesbian readers of the local newspaper. 'We are just trying to say that homosexuals won't be excluded if they apply'.

The advertisement, featuring a picture of two children, included gays and lesbians with ethnic, single and disabled people as categories 'currently under-represented as carers'.
