Birmingham city council highway officials are to order contractors to break up miles of hole in the road repair jobs after a council survey found that more than 60 per cent could be faulty.

The Birmingham Post (p1) reports that council engineers checking holes after companies like Transco, the pipe laying division of British Gas, had carried outrefilling work found that many of the jobs were faulty.

The work is to be redone now to avoid the prospect of a huge repair bill for council tax payers in future.
