The district council leader of Maldon in Essex - the earliest recorded place name in the English language which will disappear under the review - has protested to Local Government Commission chairman Sir John Banham, the Evening Standard reports (p20).

The commission has suggested the authority merges with neighbouring Chelmsford BC to form Chelmsford and East Essex council.

Maldon council leader John Smith said that the commission had always stressed the importance of community identity and historical context, the paper reports.
