Local authorities which produce the best value for money in providing local services should be rewarded, suggests CIPFA Scottish secretary Ian Doig.

In a letter to The Scotsman (p14) Mr Doig said this would be one way of maximising what individual councils can achieve within the tight constraints of the block and formula arrangements.

'This might be difficult to evaluate and agree without authoritative independent data, but the performance indicators, presently being developed between the accounts commission and Scottish local authorities offer the government an opportunity to reward those authorities which can demonstrate best value for money', he writes.
