More than£2m is to be cut from the social services budget of Rhondda Cynon Taff CBC. The council has been warned, reports the Western Mail (p6), that the cutbacks will have a devastating effect on frontline services.

A consultation exercise involving trade unions, NHS trusts, voluntary and private sector care agenices will begin at once if the cuts are approved by the social services committee on Thursday. The council faces a budget crisis this year and an estimated£20m shortfall in funds next year.

Director of social services Bernard Majer is quoted: 'We must emphasise that the cuts identified, if approved, will very seriously damage the authority's ability to discharge its statutory social services responsibilities.'
