Labour members of Rhondda Cynon Taff CBC yesterday announced that they wanted extensive public consultation on proposals for an elected mayor.

The Western Mail (p5) reports that the ruling Labour group will be putting forward a proposal to the full council that a committee of councillors should supervise the consultation programme.

All three options for change proposed in the Local Government Bill will be presented to local people and organisations for their comments.

Council leader Russell Roberts said members were not looking to rush into new management arrangments, but added that a restructuring of staff departments was going ahead.

'The other part of the reform jigsaw is a new political management structure. Our view is that a cabinet with a leader will best serve the needs of the authority. Ours is only one of many opinions; we want to hear what others think, including opposition councillors.'
