Gloucestershire CC has transferred its direct labour organisation Gloucestershire Contracting to the private sector as of the beginning of September.

The dlo has gone to the Ringway Group of Horsham, West Sussex which won the five year contract in competition with eight other contractors. Ringway now acquires the plant, workforce and assets of Gloucestershire Contracting and undertake highway maintenance and repair, new highway construction works, vehicle and plant maintenance, and landscaping and sports ground maintenance on a contract basis for the council.

County Surveyor, Richard Wigginton, said: 'Gloucestershire Contracting has made an annual profit since its formation but its future prospects within the public sector are hampered by government legislation which dictates that it must make a 5% return on capital while restricting its scope to win private sector contracts.

'We believe that privatisation is the best route forward, for the long term future of the organisation and its workforce, and for the quality of service provided to the county.'

Ringway Limited chairman Dixon Atkinson said: 'Ringway is committed to a major expansion programme throughout the south west and the Gloucestershire Team will play a key part in these exciting plans.'
